Earth Hour Stockholm City 2009 http://lifecruiser.org/archive/earth-hour-stockholm-city-2009/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/earth-hour-stockholm-city-2009/#comments Sat, 28 Mar 2009 22:59:39 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=1939 Earth Hour begins Stockholm Fjällgatan towards Skeppsbron, Photo by Lifecruiser

The photo shows how Earth Hour in Stockholm City begins. Yes, we were out there in the darkness.

Not all lights went off at the same time, it gradually went darker. Personally I would have loved if all the lights could have been turned off, but I guess that’s too much of a security risk.

In this second photo you can see how it did look like after a while, though unfortunately it were a very foggy evening, so the photos didn’t come out the way they should.

Earth Hour Darkness Stockholm Fjällgatan towards Skeppsbron, Photo by Lifecruiser

That’s pretty dark to be in Stockholm, but I think it could have been more people participating than it was.

Stockholm Castle were dark, so even Drottningholms Castle. We couldn’t see the anything at Kastellholmen, Gröna Lund (tivoli) or anything at Djurgården. It was just black in that direction.

One of Stockholms most wellknown and visible landmarks, the big Globe arena, were not to be seen in at all in the darkness.

We did try to take more photos, but it’s no use of showing you totally black photos….

When driving through the city, it was darker than normal, but also many lights turned on in the apartments.

If I hadn’t known that it was Earth Hour, I might not even have thought about it.

Update: Despite the fact that we was even reminded about it when drinking milk – our milk packages suddenly turned black about a week ago with an urge about Earth hour on them!!!

Swedish Wintergames Streaker http://lifecruiser.org/archive/swedish-wintergames-streaker/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/swedish-wintergames-streaker/#comments Fri, 30 Jan 2009 18:31:50 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=1725

I’m supporting Sweden in the wintergames by showing this simply hilarious video. This is catching the Swedish soul in a nutshell: fun, outgoing and surprising!

Swedish Ski destinations Åre and Östersund hopes to get the honor of organizing the Olympic Winter Games. They’ve already applied three times since 1986 without luck.

For travelers it would be a cool(d) opportunity to see the glory of Sweden in it’s winter dress.

Good luck Sweden!

Our children will accuse us – serious thoughts for all of us http://lifecruiser.org/archive/our-children-will-accuse-us-serious-thoughts-for-all-of-us/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/our-children-will-accuse-us-serious-thoughts-for-all-of-us/#comments Tue, 16 Dec 2008 10:54:26 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=1627 Claudie sent us an email with a link to an excellent video, very true reminder of what we humans are up to today and what we should have realized already a long time ago.

Listen very carefully to everything that is said in the video below and especially in the beginning:

“This generation of children that grows up now, are the first generation in modern history that’s not going to be as healthy as their parents”.

I find that very disturbing and I would be even more concerned and worried if I were a parent.

Let these words travel around the world:

Une bonne raison de consommer bio et équitable !

To make the film “Our children will accuse us” wich speaks about the problem with a bad alimentation and pesticides, realised by a french man, can stay a long time in cinema rooms , a maximum of people must watch the “bande_annonce” during the three day to come. (sorry for my bad english langage)

Bonjour,

http://www.nosenfantsnousaccuseront-lefilm.com/

Faites passer, c’est sérieux. Même si vous ne visionnez pas complètement, c’est le nombre de visites dans les 3 jours qui fera son poids… Aller le voir est encore mieux.

Autre document ci-dessous.

Bon appétit …..!

I’m really concerned that not more has been done in this matter already. We’re supposed to be so intelligent, living in such developed countries, but is it the opposite really?

One of many questions are: why aren’t every school canteen serving organic food? Then follows many, many other questions.

I’ve always said that all the pollutions, pesticides, hormones and whatever we put into our food, must leave dangerous traces in our bodies. No one knows exactly the long term side effects.

I feel really sorry for our youngsters growing up today to this – by humans created – mess we leave after us.

Try to put yourself in their shoes. We haven’t seen the end of this influence yet. Who knows how their future will be?

Sometimes I wonder exactly how dumb, numb, greedy, selfish and [fill in the blanks yourself] we humans can be…

Would you give 10 dollar to save a kid from dying? http://lifecruiser.org/archive/save-lives-buy-the-net/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/save-lives-buy-the-net/#comments Thu, 13 Nov 2008 12:01:55 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=1478 NBN, NothingButNets, UN, United Nation Foundation, save lives buy nets, refugees, malariaWould you give $10 to save a kid from dying? Of course you would! Then you have your chance NOW….

1. I got an email that instantly got stuck in my brain. An email that clearly disturbed my concentration. That practically screamed to me to write a blog post about it. That email were written by Mark Leon Goldberg at UN Dispatch.

2. It was about the United Nations Foundation‘s anti-malaria Nothing But Nets campaign, a grassroots effort to prevent malaria in Africa. Together with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) they have a huge campaign about an immediate need of 275,000 life-saving bed nets to 630,000 refugees in Africa to save their lives.

There were also a link that shows the story of refugees fight with malaria, plus an invitation to find out more in a conference call with malaria experts from the UN Foundation and the UN High Commission on Refugees, Nov 19.

3. My first reaction was that this was an unusual way to reach out, being contacted directly by email plus invited to a conference call.

I did respond well on it though. When it comes to saving lives, I don’t think anything or any method should stop us, do you…?

4. I did check it out and I must say that I got really impressed over all the work that is put into this good cause, not only by United Foundation and NothingButNets, but lots of other including private persons.

5. Then I remembered the #1 excuses I’ve heard from persons why they don’t like to donate money: they’re not sure where the money goes, if it’s eaten up by administrative costs. In this case, you don’t have to doubt:

“The United Nations Foundation is a registered public charity under section 501(c)3 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. 100% of your donation will go to providing nets to children in Africa; no portion of your donation will be diverted for administrative costs”.

6. You can read what the United Nations Foundation says about the campaign here: United Methodists Join the United Nations Foundation in Anti-Malaria Net Distribution Effort

7. Read these horrible Buzzkill Facts from NothingButNets:

“Each year, malaria afflicts approximately a half-billion people (roughly the population of the United States, Canada, and Mexico combined), kills more than a million per year and 90 percent of those who die are children”.

8. What about a vaccine? It isn’t there yet. Those insecticide treated bed nets are the quick solution as well as cheap and effective. One of those nets covers a family for years.

9. All of us need to be confronted by these kind of facts and picture proof sometimes, because we live our good protected lives and keep forgetting that such misery actually exists – or rather burying our heads in the ground like an ostrich not wanting to realize it.

We need to support humanitarianism in a much larger scale now than ever. Considering how many wealthy (comparable) people living in this world, it’s not really flattering that not more efforts are done to help other human beings in misery.

Ponder this: If we’re not doing anything, we’re actually letting other humans suffer and die, when there are such easy methods that helps.

We’re a bunch of selfish bastards…. (Excuse me, but isn’t it true?)

10. Watch the video and see how it impacts you:

11. There are several different ways to help out, which you can find at their page I’ts Easy to Help.

12. I CHALLENGE YOU to at least display a banner in your blogs sidebar to help spread the message. It doesn’t cost you anything!

(Click to go to NothingButNets banner page to download a banner. Do not link directly to the banner I have here or at their page, since that’s called “hotlinking” and is eating up their bandwidth. Host your downloaded banner somewhere like Photobucket, Imageshack)

13. Surely you can be without the candy you were going to buy and instead click the button below to go there and donate $10 – show some humanness and save a life!

NBN, NothingButNets, UN, United Nation Foundation, save lives buy nets, refugees, malaria,

Dona Nobis Pacem Nov 2008: Non-Violence http://lifecruiser.org/archive/dona-nobis-pacem-nov-2008-non-violence/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/dona-nobis-pacem-nov-2008-non-violence/#comments Thu, 06 Nov 2008 10:57:16 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=1302 Lifecruiser photo Non-Violence sculpture knotted gun

This is one of the non-violence sculptures created by the Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, at Sergelgatan, Stockholm City. It also stands in several other places of Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö.

The sculpture was unveiled by H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the 4th of December 1995.

There were also an event in the evening, when hundreds of persons were forming a human knotted gun – holding torches – and photo was taken from above by a helicopter.

I know that because Mr Lifecruiser was one of those persons forming the knotted gun. Unfortunately he couldn’t find the newspaper picture of it to show us.

At the same time the song Imagine by John Lennon were played – Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd started to work on the first non-violence sculpture because he was so furious over the murder of his friend John Lennon in 1980.

Much later he wrote that while making this peace symbol, he thought of adding a touch of humor to make his weapon symbolically ridiculous and totally out of order, since humor is the finest instrument to bring people together.

Reuterswärd initiated the start of The Non-Violence Project in 1995 and already in 1998 this project had engaged more than 3.000.000 young people in non-violence projects in schools at 3 continents!

The Non-Violence Project won acknowledge for the work by The Paul Harris Fellow Award of Rotary International in 1997; The Award of Honor by The Safety Council of the United States, 1999; The Daily Points of Light Award from The US presidency best citizens cooperation in the USA year 2000.

There are copies of it all over the world spreading it’s unambiguous peace message: New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Lausanne, Zurich, Johannesburg, Cape Town, London, Caen, Curitba, Luxemburg, Berlin and more places.

These sculptures are mentioned by lots of travelers in travel sites forums, tourist books and even blogs, including my blog. Not to mention how many photos of them that has been taken!

I remember that lots of people (including myself) were wearing a miniature pin version of the knotted gun on our jackets back then. There even was a Swedish stamp with the knotted gun published the third of August 1995 to celebrate UN’s 50th anniversary.

The sculpture in New York, were put up there in September 1988 as a gift by the Government of Luxembourg and is said to be “a monument that no one ever forget about after visiting the FN-building”.

FN’s general secretary once personally wrote:

“With Non-Violence, Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd has not only endowed the Untited Nations with a cherished work of art; he has enriched the consciousness of humanity with a powerful symbol. It is a symbol that encapsulates, in a few simple curves, the greatest prayer of man: that which asks not for victory, but for peace.”

In 1989 he had a severe stroke that made him unconscious for two and a half month. He woke up with no memories and his right side not functioning. Yet, he did not hesitate to take on the challenge to come back, he continued to develop his artwork with his left hand.

I’m a big admirer of Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, not only for creating the non-violence sculpture and starting the non-violence project, but also for his persistence.

We should all copy his persistence, especially when working for peace.
