Our regular readers know that we from time to time like to make reviews of different travel related things, this time another travel tool. Yes, it’s necessary to keep up to date what’s going on in the travel world.

Insider at the Olympics

One of the accredited journalist for Olympics, a Swiss journalist and blogger, Urs Berger, is blogging live from Vancouver for them at On The Road To new Olympics blog.

This means that his press pass will get him into places where regular visitors wouldn’t usually, so be sure to keep an eye on his writing for live experiences.

On The Road Main features

On The Road has a lot of features which I can’t go into in details, so I listed the most useful here.

Main features of the travel application are:

  • Publication of articles together with photos and videos, accompanied by an exact GPS location
  • Possibility to export the GPS coordinates directly to a navigation
  • Google maps integration
  • Google Latitude integration available
  • Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed integration available
  • Easy organization of trips, articles and comments
  • Offline mode (phone app) – store travel adventures to the phone and upload them at once
  • NearByMe feature (phone application) – Find cool places and events nearby at any time
  • Subscribers – Track and organize the followers of a certain trip
  • SMS, MMS, email article publishing available as well

I really like the interactive maps that more easily can let friends and family follow our location and see where we’re going next, but also the drag-and drop sorting is making everything more easy. Plus I don’t have to worry about compatibility since all image, video or audio format seem to work.

Seeing the local weather is another thing that comes in handy for us travelers. If creating a schedule, our TripBook will even keep a record of the weather on our trip – nice!

Friends and family can send comments on our created trips and photos and we’ll get an email notifications about it. If we reply to the comment, they will receive an email as well. They can also subscribe to the trip and get email notifications every time wel post something new.

One of the perhaps most useful features after a trip, is that you can make it available as a web widget on your blog, to show your articles from On The Road.

Of course there is also possible to share everything to different social networks: log in to account, go to “Share” and select your favorite social networks.

Phone application quick glance

Since everyone nowadays seem to be totally into iPhone or similar applications, I thought I would show some screenshots from the apps too.

Don’t you just love how simple it looks? Despite that it has those really useful features, making it worth trying yet another travel tool.

Oh, and don’t miss On The Road To’s Video’s, if you want to learn more about how to use it!

Different from other travel apps?

Yes, it’s true, there are a lot of other travel applications that are similar – or travel tools that I prefer to call them – out there already, but are we really satisfied with them?

I would say most of us are not. There are still a lot to wish in all of them, but I think that this particular one is “On The Road To” some new ways of seeing things at least.

Let us hope for more interesting features to come, to really fill all our travel tools needs!

Travel site launch – TravelMob http://lifecruiser.org/archive/travel-site-launch-travelmob/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/travel-site-launch-travelmob/#comments Fri, 22 Aug 2008 02:21:59 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/archive/travel-site-launch-travelmob/ August 19th, 2008, a new travel site launched. This one is a bit different than the others I’ve seen so far, because it’s based on a TRIP and not on YOU as a user. You create a homepage for your trip you’re planning.

What did catch my interest at once – of course – was that they dared to show their sense of humor: “Don’t forget clean underwear”. That’s a very good start in my eyes… *giggles*

TravelMob is a combined social travel network site and travel booking site at the same time. It’s also a quite nice group travel site, since you can invite your fellow travelers there and keep them updated with a similar status feed as in Facebook and other popular sites.

This means that it makes it a very good travel tool for both business and hobby travelers. You can easily keep track of each other and meet up in different places in the world if you’d like to. In similar way as Evite, for party planning.

There are lots of features supporting travel in there, no doubt about it: photo galleries, message board, tour information for destinations and booking system for flights, hotels, cars – even though you don’t have to book through them. You still can add your booking details yourself from other booking sites.

I’m sure more will be coming later on to. You really get the whole feeling of planning it all in one place.

As they so well are saying themselves:

“…Just set up a quick travel page, send it to your friends, and the mob mentality takes over. People love throwing out suggestions of where to go and what to do. It’s a giant brainstorm, a collaborative travel fantasy that actually comes to fruition with the click of a button”.

Oh, and don’t miss that half of the TravelMob there will go around the world during a year. All users will be able to keep track of them during this trip. Some good example I say.

So, does it have anything I don’t like? Of course, nothing is completely without flaws! Remember, this is a very new site!

One feature that I missed, where the ability to save a search in there. For example, when I searched for tours and found one to click on, I got the information about the tour, but also the only option were to pay.

I’d love to be able to save it until later, because as an investigating travel planner, I might need to compare a lot before I decide which ones I wanna go to and I need to be able to find them fast again.

Then there is the very important first impression when you comes to a site. I don’t like the web design on this one. It looks very plain and don’t give that new, hip impression to me that I know that others than me always want too – even if it should be the functionality that rules.

Have a look for yourself – plan a trip!

New social travel guide Tripwolf goes public http://lifecruiser.org/archive/new-social-travel-guide-tripwolf-goes-public/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/new-social-travel-guide-tripwolf-goes-public/#comments Wed, 02 Jul 2008 11:33:06 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/archive/new-social-travel-guide-tripwolf-goes-public/
I’ve tested the beta version of a new social travel guide named Tripwolf for a while and now when it has launched to the public, I simply must share it with you!

At Tripwolf there are friendly trip gurus (like myself) for over 100 cities who can advise and recommend destinations or attractions of interests.

Tripwolfs admirable vision is to be the leading Web 2.0 travel guide, with a focus on Europe – for travelers going to Europe as well as Europeans traveling outside.

One of the things that appeals the most to me is that it both professional editorial travel content as well as user generated content with experiences from thousands of travelers worldwide.

In Tripwolf travelers can generate their own customized travel guide based on their own individual preferences combined with recommendations from friends and trip gurus, which makes this really awesome. What could be better than information about places and destinations directly from fellow travelers that already has been there?

I simply love that you can create your own travel guide by using the drag and drop feature into your scrap book, which you can download in a PDF-format and print out. Very handy to take with you on the trip.

They have several hundred thousands points of interests from content partners to enrich their information and soon travelers will also be able to book their trips through Tripwolf.

For you that use Facebook there is a possibility to log in with your Facebook account and invite friends with your Gmail, Yahoo!, Orkut, and Linkedin accounts.

When I first registrered and logged into Tripwolf, I instantly liked it. Besides the cool features and the fact that I could become a guru for the first time in my life (lol), I find the design very modern and appealing too.

I’ve been to many other travel sites, some good and some really crappy and I’ll not compare them in this post, because I want you too make your own opinion without me leading you to any conclusion.

Besides that, we’re so many travelers in this big world that I believe that there is a need of different travel sites, so no need to exclude the others just because a new one has launched.

For us users, it’s always a good thing with some competition to keep them alert, right?

I’m planning to become more active there after our trip to our summer paradise island, which is tomorrow! We’re leaving home early Thursday morning and will be posting from there during our stay there.

Just go there and register to check it up for yourself: Tripwolf social travel guide.

If you do register, look me up: Lifecruiser at Tripwolf and we’ll share travel experiences!
