Oh, it was so tough to resist! Only 275 SEK…

Red vintage travel suitcase

Though I was convinced by hubby that we have very new suitcases, plus our old ones, so we really don’t need another one. Besides that we were in a hurry so not much time to think about it. We bought no suitcase. Afterward I almost did regret it… *sigh*

I know, it’s not beautiful and perhaps not even so very practical, but I really love the idea of travelling around with such an old suitcase, probably from the sixties or seventies.

I doubt that anyone would want to steal it either – or take the wrong suitcase at the airport, so that would be a huge plus, don’t you think…?

Inherited Vintage Zeiss Camera http://lifecruiser.org/archive/inherited-vintage-zeiss-camera/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/inherited-vintage-zeiss-camera/#comments Sat, 29 Sep 2012 13:52:09 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=12418 Some times, like in my own case, you can trace your photo interest back in time, inherited from your father. I also inherited some smaller photo items from him, though not all the ones I would have wanted – he had several cameras…

Lifecruiser's fathers old vintage camera and photo book

This one above is just one of his old cameras, his "compact-camera" small enough to fit in the pocket – probably old times travel camera, don’t you think…?

The photo book is very scientific with lots of technical details and instructions of as well photographing as developing film – which I remember that he did by himself in our bathroom. The book was published in 1942 in the third edition – you can tell photo was a big hobby already back then!

His inscription in the Swedish book "Amatörfotografen" (The Amateur Photographer) tells me that he bought it in 1947, which makes me wonder if the camera were bought at the same time – or if it was some of his other cameras that he bought at that time.

- And don’t you just love the fact that it actually has a woman photographer on the cover of the book…? I do!!!

The camera is a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 515/16, S/N:R95250, a folding camera for 120 roll film (12 photos), 6×6-format, with folding viewfinder. Weight: 485gram. Lens:Novar-Anstigmat 1:4,5 f=7,5cm Aperture:4,5-22. Focus range: 1,2m-Endlessly. Pronto shutter B-25-50-1/200delssek.

Made in Germany, probably around 1946-1951. There are older and newer Nettar cameras than this one and with a lot of different lenses or shutters and was extremely popular, maybe even one of the most popular of all Zeiss Ikon cameras.

To be sure of the manufacturing date of the camera is almost impossible unfortunately. There is a serial number on it, but since there is no documentation of the numbers available anywhere, it’s almost impossible to know for sure. You can search on the internet and in old magazines for pictures and information about the Nettar cameras, to at least be able to tell around which years, but seldom more exactly.

Zeiss Ikon made it easier with the two red mark’s setting. There is one red mark for the aperture and another red mark to set the focus, giving the optimal setting for the lens, you just have to adjust the shutter speed after your actual light conditions. At this camera above, focus is around 8 meter and the aperture between 8 and 11, to get acceptable sharpness from around 6 meter to endlessly at normal photo sizes.

I haven’t tried to take photos with my fathers camera above (and I’m giving it away to my brother now), but it should be fully functional since I can’t see any damages on it and there still is film to buy in some photo stores that will fit those kind of cameras.

If you get a similar one in your hand I recommend to try it with black and white film first – what an authentic feeling it must give!

It has been standing on our buffet for years until now…

Napoleon Mandarine Liquor, Limoges porcelain bottle from France

It was too tempting, we could not resist it, we just had to taste it! So, how did it taste after all those years? Pretty marvelous, we must say. We were really, really impressed. So smooth.

Just look at that truly wonderful color it had! Yes, I say had, because do you really think that there is anything left now…? *giggles*

IJMuidens Historic Liquors, The Netherlands http://lifecruiser.org/archive/ijmuidens-historic-liquors-the-netherlands/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/ijmuidens-historic-liquors-the-netherlands/#comments Fri, 07 Sep 2012 17:18:58 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=12325 When coming home from a long road trip like our Europe trip, you might be lucky like we are: coming home with more than just your wonderful memories or photos. We got two local liquor’s with an interesting history, as a gift from our generous friends Cora and Ron.

Both liquors are from slijteri & wijnhuis Zeewijck in IJMUiden, The Netherlands and have an old, seaman-related history, so what could suit this blog any better…?

IJMUidens Spicy Liquor-bitter Piertje

As you can spot a glimpse of in the photo below, this is a darker liquor, which in it’s spicyness reminded us a bit about Jagermeister actually, but with a milder taste better suiting our tastebuds and obviously even the old fishermen in IJMuiden: if you consider the fact that there were 36 bars there they could escape their harsh life for a while…

Netherlands: IJMuidens Piertje liquor

The name comes from when they discovered this safe haven once upon a time, named after the ancient heads of harbor of IJMUiden. The piers protected the North Sea Canal channel in order not to silt up.

The harbor built up in IJMuiden were invaded by many fishermen at this time, who liked to drink the Kruidenbitter, giving it it’s nickname Schipperdrank or boats men liquor. I don’t blame them: it’s really good and they lived a hard life!

IJMUidens Rom Liquor Sluisje

The Netherlands: IJMuidens Sluisje Liquor

The other is a Rom liquor based on an old family recipe, with a strong Vanilla taste, bottled in a very nice old looking ceramic bottle even this one – as you can see in the photo. The name is Sluisje, which as a word means sluice and that is another interesting attractions they have to attract us tourists. Very interesting built sluices well worth a visit to study the construction of them.

Be aware though, as with other liquors, they’re rather strong: we did noticed that when we did drink it now at home… ehrm…

I say no more than: thank you again Cora and Ron, you’re as sweet as the liquors that you gave us and we really, really appreciate your gift!

Continue to keep an eye on Lifecruiser Europe roadtrip 2012 Flickr Photos, there will be new photos uploaded there now and then until I’m done with them all.

Vintage Silverpilen Motorcycle http://lifecruiser.org/archive/vintage-silverpilen-motorcycle/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/vintage-silverpilen-motorcycle/#comments Mon, 16 Jul 2012 08:00:31 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=11965 At Kuten Bensin at Fårö island, you can spend a lot of time going through all the old yard things he keeps there, Thomas, the owner of Kuten. This is just one of the many interesting things with a history, an old Silverpilen motorcycle.

Sweden, Fårö: Kutens Silverpilen Vintage Motorcycle

Silverpilen is an old motorcycle that were sold between 1955-1965 by Huskvarna in Sweden. It was counted as a light motorcycle with the weight under 75 kilo and were allowed for 16 years old to drive.

Also notice the old rusty gas pump in the background. He also has an old car graveyard around the place.

Old KA3 Military Bicycle http://lifecruiser.org/archive/old-ka3-military-bicycle/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/old-ka3-military-bicycle/#comments Tue, 10 Jul 2012 11:00:23 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=11887 Out on the countryside in Sweden and especially on islands like Gotland, there are many old bicycles used everywhere. Especially in the evenings when getting to and from different pleasures or meeting places. This one is an old military bicycle from the Gotlandic KA3 regiment.

Sweden: Gotlandic old military bicycle from KA3

Bicycles are popular not only for the exercise reason or as an environment friendly holiday option – Gotland is known as a biking holiday island, but I suspect the main reason is to avoid driving a car when having some refreshing evening drinks…

Above our heads this old fish hook captured my interest.

Sweden, Gotland: Fishing hook look

At a first look at the hook I thought it was a real small spigg (stickleback in English) fish, but it was not as you can see. A pretty well done hook though!

Keep Sweden Clean Sign http://lifecruiser.org/archive/keep-sweden-clean-sign/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/keep-sweden-clean-sign/#comments Fri, 06 Jul 2012 19:53:00 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=11777 A very classic Swedish sign that says: "Keep Sweden clean". We had many keep clean campaigns in Sweden already when I was a child. The clown is the symbol of the old Swedish icecream company GB Glace founded already in 1942.

Keep Sweden clean GB sign

You will find GB’s products at their webpage www.gb.se. They’ve also exported their very popular Magnum icecream since 1992. Our own favorite is the Lakritspuck, it’s a licorice ice cream with a round shape like an icehockey puck.

Island Road Photo: Classic Ford http://lifecruiser.org/archive/island-road-photo-classic-ford/ http://lifecruiser.org/archive/island-road-photo-classic-ford/#comments Sat, 30 Jun 2012 11:00:52 +0000 Lifecruiser http://lifecruiser.org/?p=11718 On the summer island, it’s a common sight with old classic cars as well as classic mopeds or motorcycles. I guess it’s the inspiration of the old place of Kutens Bensin that makes it more common. Below is an old classic Ford.

Sweden, Gotland: classic car on road

How old I don’t know. Today when you read this, it should be a lot of old mopeds on the way up to the island, we’ll see if they manage to come since the weather reports is not looking so very promising.
