Lifecruisers contribution to theme Gross
© Lifecruiser (Herring, Stockholm, Sweden)

Theme: Gross | Blogroll Info | Next week: Broken

Almost the same as the gross Silver fish head I showed last week. But there is some difference actually.

The Swedish word Gross is actually an old way to count:

1 dussin = 12 of anything
1 gross = 1 dussin dussin.

Clear? *giggles*

Gross is 12×12 = 144 is the right answer with other words.

Later on we just started to use the word gross for something that comes in a big amount, not precisely 144 things of something.

Grosshandel = Big volumes of merchandises, what you would call Wholesale I think.

So this is Gross in two meanings.

A lot of gross huh? *lol*

That´s gross to the max! LOL – the German word is “Grosshandel”, too and 12 is a “Duzent”.

Have I told you that I´ve been spending a wonderful time in Stockholm a few years ago? No? I did! And guess what? I considered eating FISH to be gross before! But than I tried some fresh Swedish fish and my new motto is “Hall dig frisk, ätt fisk” LOL

    Ha en travlig helg!

Lifecruiser: Aha, so interesting. We do have a lot of common words in the Swedish-German language making it easier to understand each other :-)

Yes, I knew that you’ve been here, but not that you learned to eat fish! Well, it’s good for us, but I must admit that I’m not that good at it myself… I’ll eat if someone else cook it. And no fish bones thank you :-)

Ha en trevlig helg själv :-)

Ya, that’s gross. And in the states also….a gross of anything that is a dozen of 12.

Clever read this fine Saturday….but a bit gross.

    Mine’s posted.
    Don’t forget the gag rag.

Lifecruiser: Really? I wonder where it origin from….. OK, I’ll pop over after we had dinner over here :-)

Did you copy from Wikipedia ??? I saw all definitions of “gross” in there, but still your herings are more gross ! I were inspired by TNchick, and then helped by my cat Arthur who was kind enough to pose for me !

Lifecruiser: No, I didn’t copy that from Wikipedia. But now you made me go over there and look it up and here it was it says:

    The term gross may mean:

    * before deductions (brutto), e.g. gross domestic or national product, or gross profit or income. In this sense, it may appear, separated by a comma, following the noun it modifies, e.g., “earned two million dollars, gross”. Compare: net;
    * flagrant, in criminal law or in tort law, e.g. gross indecency or gross negligence;
    * Gross (unit), a counting unit equal to 144.
    * in anatomical pathology, gross examination means identification of disease with the naked eye.
    * In mysticism, the gross realm is the physical, bodily realm, as opposed to the subtle realm of mind, the causal realm of form, and the nondual.
    * ‘Gross’ is also a slang term meaning ‘disgusting’ or ‘grotesque’

Though it doesn’t tell where and when and by whom this expressions were invented. Maybe I’ll have to do a research about that…. *lol*

Now my daughter would think pickled herring or actually herring of any type is “gross”. Actually there are so many things she considers “gross” I often wonder how she manages to get through a day. Then I think the messy state of her college dorm room is “gross”, especially when I had to go and pack it up.
    Have a great weekend.

Lifecruiser: Well, she isn’t alone on that part, many people do, at least about the pickled herring :-) I learned to eat it when I was young, with a lot of sour cream and chive over it to hide the look of it… *lol*

Come visit and gross out on my fly! Have a super Saturday!

Lifecruiser: I know…. *lol* I did fly over to your place and what you’ve got there is way much better than mine :-)

I hope that you’re having a flying good Sat. too!!!!

Lifecruiser: Yes, I know… I may have to stop this… *lol* Fish can be fantastic delicious, too bad that I’m not good at preparing it though!!! I wish I were. Or had some recipes that really made me drool. But I don’t and I haven’t find any either – yet. I must admit that I haven’t searched that long either…. Maybe I should…. some day… *s*

It looks like fresh fish filleted and that is a dish of the Philippines. They put vinegar and spices on it and put hot chillis and people eat it. I think it’s a tad gross but if you closs your eyes, it’s fine.

Lifecruiser: OK, how interesting because that sounds a bit familiar, like our pickled herring :-)

    15

    Yes, very gross!

    Lifecruiser: Thanks… I think… *lol*

    Have a great weekend,

Lifecruiser: Neither did I, before I started to really think about the word Gross :-)

Did not know you were daughter of a “grosserare” or “grossist” as we say across the border. LoL.

Some use the expression about fat people (really fat):
    - Must be a son/daughter of a “grossist”.

Gross entry. Have a nice Sunday.

    =^.^=

Lifecruiser: funny, I was just thinking of popping over to your blog when you popped up here *lol* Actually we say grossist nowadays too, but not about the fat though :-)

    25

Better than grubs I saw the Koombais eating last week? So realative, eh?

Lifecruiser: Yes, it is soooo relative:-)

    26

The fish don’t look gross to me.

There is some ambiguity in that above statement, but it applies. Gross (replace the ss with ß) in German means big, and in English it means, well, gross!

It’s really intriguing how one word can mean different things in different language!

Lifecruiser: Well, I think they look both gross and somehow good at the same time. It’s very strange though….

    27

Shall I get into a rendition of “Fish Heads” again?! :)

    Mine’s up too :)

    Lifecruiser: He he, maybe…

    28

Oh yes definitely gross in so many ways.

    Clever job on The Hunt!

Lifecruiser: Thanks Pastormac’s Ann. Well, maybe not so clever, but very gross :-) *lol*

    29

Shiny gross – the best kind :)

Lifecruiser: Yes, they really are shiny too and that makes the pic somewhat nice too. It’s a weird picture!

You’re right Mrs. Lifecruiser. Gross in English also means 144 items or 12 sets of 12. In French it means Large.

I see though, that with your photo, you went with the more common meaning of Gross. LOL yeah fish heads are gross and the smell gross too!!!! Bleahhhhhh

Lifecruiser: I was thinking: If we didn’t associate this picture with smething that we shall eat, would we still think that it looks gross? I’m not so sure that I would.

Hey – I didn’t know that Swedish and German have some same words – how cool!!!

Thanks for stopping by the other day and voting for Sting My Heart – much appreciated :)

Lifecruiser: Yes, we have, so actually it’s easier for us to learn each others language – except maybe for the grammar :-) I’ve studied german language for 3 years in school, but don’t remember anything of it….
