Lifecruisers contribution to theme Original 2

Theme: Original | Next week: Curvy

This is an original ad of the original brand of the old soft drink Pommac, which I took a photo of from the original Swedish magazine Husmodern (The House Mother), which is from 1947!

The top image says:

“Ooo! I was only going to cool off the bottles…”

The next image says: “…what a sweetie you are, going through wet and dry for me and Pommac”

* Yes, you take it cool with Pommac – and at the bottom!

Cut from Wikipedia:

“Pommac is a Swedish carbonated soft drink made of fruits and berries and matured in oak barrels for 3 months. The first pommac was made in 1919. The name comes from “Pomm” as in pomme, apple in French, and “ac” as it is matured on oak barrels like cognac. The recipe is kept a secret.

In 1919, Anders Lindahl, a failed businessman from Hudiksvall moved to Stockholm, Sweden, and founded Fructus Fabriker and began to make Pommac. The recipe was made by a Finland-Swedish inventor. The drink was made for the upper classes as an alcohol free substitute for wine.

Dr Pepper distributed a formulation of it in the US as a diet drink from 1963 to 1969 in six-and-a-half- and ten-ounce bottles. It took a while for people to become accustomed to the taste, so sales were slow. When sales remained stagnant after six years, and its sweetener, sodium cyclamate, was banned, Dr Pepper discontinued the product.

Some of its loyal (particularly younger) fans thought of it as “near beer.” Pommac is also served as ersatz champagne for teetotallers and car drivers on public celebrations.

In late 2004, Carlsberg in Denmark announced that they were going to cease production of Pommac due to economical reasons. However, after overwhelming public demand (including a petition tallying over 50,000 signatures) was raised in response, the company decided to keep marketing Pommac”.

So, it’s really an original tradition here in Sweden :-)

Interesting idea for the original theme. I like old ads or at least interesting ones. Those are great for a look back at another decade. I remember hearing about near beer but I am not familiar with Pommac. I guess the near beer people mentioned was Pommac.

Interesting. We have a drink called Moxie that is also an acquired taste, but still very popular in the northeast of the USA.

It’s a pity that I never had the honor to drink it ! Must taste very good. Tomorrow I take you to the Lake of Garda where you can fill you with good pasta and wine ! No Flip Flops please otherwise you will hang behind the group ! The streets are out of cobble stones !
BTW why did you put the American flag on your blog ? Belongs Sweden now to the States and I didn’t hear about it ?

That’s one original I haven’t had the chance to try, but there is always hope :)
Very interesting story too . And I am glad I am old enough to have original champagne and not the “ersatz” :)
It looks like party ground! we don’t celebrate Halloween but I am always ready to party. Too bad I am flying to Hamburg early on 10/31st so I will not be able to join in the final party. That means I have to party hard beforehand! Cheers

Thanks for stopping by on my blog! I really like your idea on the original – especially because I love old ads. About your question: we are saving our money to go on a trip around the world and the Philippines are one definite stop-over. But first we need the cash and we need to finish our degrees. :)

That is very new to me! I love the ads and cooling off drinks in the water seems familiar; I think we used to do that when I was a child when we went on our fishing trips in the boat, but we would cool off sodas like coca cola and sprites and root beers.

When we go to Sweden, we’ll know what to look for. hehe!!

I’ve downloaded some of Sanni’s graphics too! October is my favorite month of the year along with July. October is the BEST!!! :-D
