We’re going on a Sunday road trip in the Swedish vikings countryside, butt still very nearby the capital!!! It’s not the last part of the secret islands though… *giggles*
Remember when we were leaving the secret island aka Viking Town Birka? Yes, we were hungry, butt we also wanted to see the island across the water from Birka, Adelsö since the weather improved so miraculous as soon as I had left the island
The name Adelsö translated from Swedish to English means Nobility island and it probably got it’s name because the Swedish nobility established itself here already around 1280, but the story of Adelsö goes back from the stone age, even if there are most graves from the viking age.
They don’t seem to know which Svea (old expression for Swedish) King that founded The Swedish Viking Town Birka for the trading. It’s assumed that the king avoided the noise and dirt of Birka and instead made his royal estate called Hovgården (The Court Farm), on the Island of Adelsö.
So we had to go with the boat from Birka to Kaggeholm to fetch our car and then drive around to Adelsö by the island Munsö, where we did a stop at the country store to fill up the car with gas before going on the ferry to Adelsö, since there is no gas station!
To get to Adelsö, we had to take one of Swedens many free road ferrys, butt this one is driven by cable, you don’t see many of those any more. The lake is still the sweet water lake Mälaren. Crossing time for the ferry: 6 minutes.
Our first sight of Adelsö when coming across with the ferry was these boats. Since there are so much water surrounding Stockholm, there is so many people having boats around here.
There is unusually many remains of kings from the Viking Age and when Birka was abandoned, Adelsö continued to have an important role long into the middle ages.
We didn’t get to see Adelsö properly though since we were so late there, considering we had been in Birka for several hours too.
Adelsö has many permanent residents today and most of them have work in Stockholm, even if there still are farmers and fishermen too.
One of Sweden’s few authentic runic stone carvers still work here at the island!
It’s also a very popular place to have summerhouse – not to mention all the stables and horses! The first time I was out here was to visit a friend and her horse.
We had to go some where to eat and since we were many miles from home, it became urgent. It was there we found this wonderful old Ferguson tractor.
That’s the beauty with road trips, you’ll never know what you’ll find!
We had another place in mind from the beginning, for dinner, butt we couldn’t wait… OK, OK, the hungry monster Captain weren’t that manipulable at that time…. *giggles* So we went to the local road “krog”.
It’s funny how we can be so lucky to see some very plain and simple food dishes as Kebab (mine!) and Swedish hash… *giggles*
So after that we did catch the ferry back because it was 06.00 pm already. You can see the short water way it is with the ferry in this photo.
This kind of alley is very common in Sweden generally, butt this one is leading us to….. tomorrows post!!!!
*teasing you*
