I’ve always heard of all the flowers in The Netherlands, so I decided we would go there to actually see them and not only hear about it. I booked a trip for us to Amsterdam and Haarlem in the end of April 2005.

We had heard of a special flower parade we wanted to see. It’s amazing floats made of flowers, all unbelievable creations in the annual flower parade called Bollenstreek in North Holland. It starts in Noordwijk and ends in Haarlem (about 40 km long).

They said it was 1,5 million hyacinths and thousands of narcissus and other flowers used in the parade. Hundreds of volunteers are busy for months making the floats as beautiful and striking as possible.

It truly was amazing what they had done. Fantastic creations. Even people who aren’t interested in flowers are bound to be impressed and amazed over this!

There was very nice festivities around the parade too. People were out enjoying themself. Haarlem is a very nice little town - enjoyable even without the flower parade.

It was a little bit early in the spring though to actually see a lot of Tulips, which I wanted, so I guess we have to go there some time again…. *lol*

I love flowers too. I just don’t like them at home. (I just feel sorry them standing in the vase and probably crying) But the meadows - oh, they can be really free there. :)))
And the famous tulips:))) Actually it is a great idea to go the Netherlands to see so many of them. :))

Lifecruiser: Yes, then you can see whole fields of them. Must be very beautiful from the air. I missed that view since it was to early in the spring, so I have to go there some more time :-)

Here in the USA the Rose Parade on New Years Day is the same. Incredible floats all made using some part of the flower. I have never been to it , it is in California, but have watched it on TV many times. The people who do the floats are true artists!

Lifecruiser: Yes, they truly are! What an achievement to build these. They’re sure are admirable. There are many flower parades I ewould love to visit, I hear… *lol*

I always wonder what they do with all these flowers after the parade. My oh my. But they are gorgeous.

I’d love to see the the tulips in Holland someday. Wonder how they keep the critters out of them -. I planted 75 tulips one year and none - NONE came up. Moles or voles had a feast.

I joined GTS midweek. Enjoyed your post. Thanks for sharing.

Lifecruiser: Welcome to the GTS - I’m rather new at it myself. Ooops, yeah they really had a feast then! You’d better go to Holland to see Tulips then ;-)

It is great learning about festivals of other cultures.
We always hear about Tulips, but we don’t realize that Tulips are just the first flowers that crops up in Holland. The rest of the year we can probably see all those types of flowers all over the Netherlands.
    Very beautiful!

Lifecruiser: Yes, that’s one of the reasons I love to travel :-)
