The Statue of Christ
Here we stand, looking up to him, blessing the city with open arms, on the mountain of Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on our trip in Nov-Dec 2005. The Corcovado mountain (looks like a hunchback) is 710 m tall (about 2,400 feet). The Statue of Christ stands about 30 meters high (100 feet), covered in a mosaic of soapstone. You have a wonderful view from up there, over Rio, Copacabana and Sugar Loaf mountain. This time I was not only covered in sweat because of the scary height, it was hot outside and a lot of walking in stairs too!
Whisper: Probably the only time I’ll get the possibility to get a shot of Christ…

    Lifecruiser: Yes, I understand now, that we were lucky with the weather when we were there, because they say that it can be very cloudy or misty views from there.

    Lifecruiser: They have a train the first part of it, then you can walk the stairs and I believe they even had elevators some part of the way.

    Lifecruiser: Yes, it were. Magnificent. All the way to the top and the statue. For us probably once in a lifetime experience, so better to really capture it in photos :-)

    Great photo and an interesting story of climbing the mountain too. Our new Brazilian boarder was in the room when your photo came up so I called him over and asked him if he’d been there and if he’d seen the statue and he said yes he’s visited it once. (He’s from San Paulo).

    Lifecruiser: Ah, yes, now I remember reading about your Brazilian boarder. Well, Sao Paolo is a big town too with one of their most used airports I think. We changed flights there. Stayed one night by mistake too (don’t ask!). Sorry we didn’t get the chance to do some seightseeing in Sao Paolo, that would have been great.

    Lifecruiser: Well, I really hope we’ll make it there some day! I guess it’s the same with AZ as with South America, we did choose to not go there during their summer, because that would have been too hot for us :-)
